How do you run Artweaver under Linux?

Beitragvon Troken » Mi Aug 26, 2009 11:10 am

Hello,

I use Linux more and more (LinuxMint) which is great. I have tested many paint-programs, but my favorite is still Artweaver - which I miss very much (Boris, it is still the best!). It is said that Artweaver works well under Wine, but I can not get it to work, Artweaver always crashes during startup. Searching the internet has not been successful, instructions I find are always for people already experienced with Linux.

Can some friendly soul please give a instruction how to properly install Artweaver under Ubuntu/LinuxMint? Maybe this thread can be filled with instructions for other Linux distributions as well?

And please, write so a complete newbie (like me) can understand. :)

Artweaver under Linux

Beitragvon avryhof » Di Sep 01, 2009 11:59 pm

Artweaver seems to run perfectly under WINE.

Here is what I did on Kubuntu 9.04, so with Mint the procedure might be a little different but will get you there.

If you aren't using the latest version of WINE, you should be.

I will assume you know how to get to a terminal on your own, since that is probably the easiest way to do this without making a ton of screen shots, and it should work on any Debian based Linux distribution (Mint/Ubuntu/Kubuntu/etc.)

1. Open a Terminal (for KDE 4 - Menu -> Type Konsole in the Search, then click on Terminal (Konsole))

2. At the terminal, type

Code: Alles auswählen

wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

(you will be asked for your password)

3. At the terminal, type

Code: Alles auswählen

sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/jaunty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

4. Then Type

Code: Alles auswählen

sudo apt-get update
then

Code: Alles auswählen

sudo apt-get install wine
(you shouldn't be asked for your password this time)

5. Type

Now reinstall Artweaver and give it a try. If that doesn't work, you might need to try to run it from the terminal to see what error messages are coming up and post them to the wine or Linux Mint forums.

Code: Alles auswählen

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Artweaver\ 0.5/Artweaver.exe

Thank you Avryhof, your help is highly appreciated! :) I will try your instructions as soon as I can, I belive that all those commands will work directly under Mint, they usually do.

Avryhof, thank you. It worked. I don't know how or what, but I can start Artweaver now. Next thing will be to get the Wacom tablet to work with it, but thats another issue. Thanks again!

This may help you http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/
AFAIN you won't get support for pressure sensitivity for AW. At the moment WINE supports only certain painting programs. Either WINE or AW has to be developed in this 'compatibility' direction to fix this. You can read more in this thread http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11846 and related. I hope this will be finally solved soon, but all I can do is wait.
